On Friday, May 24th, the Upper Multiage students of Ms. McCarty-Drapcho and Mr. Watson’s classes at Sandwich Central School released over 80 Eastern Brook Trout fry into the Cold River in North Sandwich. The Upper Multiagers were joined by Green Mountain Conservation Group members and Americorp volunteers to participate in their most successful release to date. The fourth and fifth graders accepted their role as citizen scientists in January 2024 when they received a shipment of Brook Trout eggs from the New Hampshire Fish and Game, Berlin NH fish hatchery. From that point on, under the guidance of Kayla Croteau of the NHF&G and Tara Schroeder of the Green Mountain Conservation Group, the students caringly raised the trout until they reached their fry stage and were ready to be released in the wild. The students’ responsibilities included testing the aquarium water quality daily, checking the water temperature, and feeding the young trout. The Trout in the Classroom program has become a tradition at Sandwich Central School, one that allows the students to learn many interesting facts about the Eastern Brook Trout, New Hampshire’s state freshwater fish, and a species of concern. The importance of this project is not lost on the student participants and will hopefully inspire some to become future Fish and Game conservation officers and aquatic biologists.
