SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

We’ve had our first frost in most of Sandwich, the colors in the leaves are changing and there is a definite chill each morning and each evening. Haven’t the days just been wonderful? It would have done wonders for all of us to have had a few of these days mixed in during June and July when it was so rainy day after day. Right now actually, we could use an inch or two of rain (at night); but I am happy just to enjoy what we have.  And, I certainly do not want rain Sandwich Fair Weekend.

Saturday, I bundled up my Soft Touch Farm supplies and headed over to Rockywood Deephaven for the Squam Arts Workshop. It was a festive time and I got the chance to demonstrate a bit of needle-felting during the Squam Art Fair in the Deephaven Dining room on Saturday evening. Elizabeth McCrellis of Sandwich organizes the Squam Art Workshops. She did one four day workshop in 2008, two in 2009, and has 4 workshops scheduled for 2010. She is a woman of great Energy, talent, ideas, and enthusiasm. People come from all over the country for these events.

Anyway, I digress. I decided that I would make a presence for Sandwich and the Sandwich Business Group by bringing brochures and information about Sandwich so that the people visiting our area would know a little bit about the town to the east. I gathered the CD from the Advice from the Players “A Fair Assembly” and the CD Audio Guide of Sandwich which Marion and Richard Posner did with the Sandwich Historical Society and the Sandwich Business Group. I haven’t yet listened to the CD from ATTP; but I did listen to the mile by mile exploration of Sandwich—it is wonderfully done and very interesting. You can get copies for $15.95 from me, the Sandwich Historical Society shop, Mocha Rizing, Surroundings, the Corner House, the Sandwich Home Industries, the Patsy Ladd Carega Gallery and possibly other places like the North Sandwich Store. It is worth a listen and would certainly make a great gift. We all have a special place in our hearts for Sandwich and this CD just puts it into words.

Sandwich Historical Society Exhibit
The Elisha Marston House and the special exhibit on “The History of the Sandwich Fairs” will be open through October 3. Hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Enjoy a bit of Sandwich Fair History prior to the 99th Sandwich Fair.

Sandwich Woman’s Club
Last Wednesday, the Sandwich Woman’s Club and their guests had a lovely luncheon at the Carriage House at Castle in the Clouds. The program, presented by Duncan and Jamie Jacks on their R.V. trip across the country, was unfortunately interrupted by some kind of electrical problem. While Duncan was able give an interesting talk about their trip, it was only enough to whet our appetites for the slide program he and Jamie had prepared.   Soooo......we're going to give it another try: this Sunday, the 27th, 4 o'clock at  the Benz Center.

Jamie, Duncan and the Woman’s Club will be serving punch (non-alcoholic), coffee, and some light refreshments.  People are invited to BYOB........wine, beer or "other."  Ice and cups will be available.  If anyone would like to bring a small appetizer, cookies, etc. to share, that would be great.

Sandwich Fair  Information
The Sandwich Fair is just a few weeks away and it would be wonderful if the weather of the past few weeks could be in place for the fair. The Sandwich Fair Association is encouraging everyone to take some photos, paint a picture, harvest some flowers and vegetables, work on recipes, put up some preserves, finish or start and finish  a crafting project …. so that you can exhibit and possible win a ribbon and/or prize at the Fair. You do not have to be from Sandwich to enter exhibits or to participate in the Sandwich Fair. So encourage everyone you know to get exhibits ready and to get involved in the fun of the fair

The 2009 Sandwich Fair will be Columbus Day Weekend, October 10, 11, and 12. Information and entry forms for the Sandwich Fair can be found on line at www.thesandwichfair.com Brochures, posters, sweat shirts, hats, and mugs are also for sale in the fair office

Budget Committee Opening
Sandwich Board of Selectmen is looking for an interested candidate for our Budget Committee.  If you would like to be a member of this important committee, please submit a letter of interest by Monday, October 5th to the Selectmen's Office at PO Box 194, Center Sandwich, NH  03227, or e-mail to tos@cyberpine.net.Budget Committee meetings begin in mid-October and will meet every other Wednesday evening for at least 7-8 weeks. Community Food Center
The CFC in Tamworth has been healthier than most Food Pantries in recent months, but the effects of the struggling economy are starting to hit home there, too. In addition to diced tomatoes, cake and frosting mixes, salsa, shampoo, toothpaste, and dishwasher detergent, we need the basics - canned fruit and vegetables, meat, and 'hearty' soups, among others.
I've finally learned to put CFC on our shopping list. Sandwich has been a Godsend to the Center at St. Andrew's, which also serves members of the Sandwich community. Thanks to all! Dick Devens.

Child’s Pedal Tractor Pull
The Children's Pedal Tractor Pull event on Saturday of Sandwich Fair weekend could use your help. It takes a minimum of 20 kind-hearted folks to successfully put this on....if you commit to helping out for three hours from 9am until noontime you will receive a committee ribbon that allows you onto the fairgrounds for the weekend. Please reply to:
pennywhistle@emailmv.com or call 284-6210 or the fair office at 284-7062.

Sandwich Home Industries
Discover the Spirit of the Maker at Sandwich Home Industries as Judy Copeland demonstrates how she creates fused glass serving platters. Assembled from scores of the one-of-kind glass buttons she makes (each one a miniature collage in glass), these colorful platters are her most whimsical pieces. Judith's work is inspired by the structure and surface designs of textiles. Her signature glass pattern work is hand-drawn, acid-etched, and shimmers and looks like silk. Judith is a state-juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen and a three-time winner of the League's Stevens Glass Award

Also featured this week at the "Industries" is new work by potter Peter Sabin and glassblower Nathan Macomber. Stop in and see the great selection of Nathan's glass pumpkins and multi-color cups, and our collection of elegantly designed bowls and vases in rust, yellow and black by Peter Sabin.

And don't forget to mark your calendar for the final Craft Demonstrations of the season: Saturday September 26 – Paulette Werger, Jewelry/Metalwork; Saturday October 3 – Hillary Hutton, Rag Rugs; Saturday October 10 – Carrie Cahill Mulligan, Felted Hats

Sandwich Home Industries, League of NH Craftsmen Gallery, has been named BEST OF NH 2009 for craft shopping by New Hampshire Magazine. Visit them at 32 Main Street, on the Green, in Center Sandwich. ILHS FBLA
Come support Inter-Lakes High School's FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter as they take a trip to Franconia Notch State Park to hike the Cannon Mountain bike trails to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They invite you, your family, and friends to support them in their annual Fall walk for charity. Each year FBLA strives to donate thousands of dollars to charities such as David's House, March of Dimes, Children's Hospital at Dartmouth, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For many years, the Walk-A-Hike-Thon has been a successful fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation.  The NH FBLA wish to continue that trend.

ILHS Senior, Forrest Elliott, cannot participate in this years Walk-A-Hike-A-Thon which saddens him; but he still hopes to raise money from the community to support another FBLA member in his chapter, so that he can make it to the hike on September 26. Forrest plans to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation by making it possible for another FBLA member to hike for a good cause. If you have any questions you can email Forrest Elliott at forrest.elliott918@... or call him (cell phone 603 244 8051) anytime after 2:30 during the week and any time on the weekend. Thanks for the support!  Donations can be left at Mocha Rizing or mailed to PO BOX 343 Center Sandwich NH 03227.

Banned Books
Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read* is observed at libraries across the country during the last week of September each year.  Observed since 1982, this annual American Library Association event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose and the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where the freedom to express oneself and the freedom to choose what opinions and viewpoints to consume are both met.

The Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth village will have a display of some books that have been banned and will show two films made from banned books. On Tuesday, September 29th at 4:00 there will be a children's matinee of the movie “The Call of the Wild”. The next evening, the movie “The Color Purple” will be shown for adults at 7:00pm.
