Judith's work is inspired by the structure and surface designs of textiles. Her signature glass pattern work is hand-drawn, acid-etched, and shimmers and looks like silk. Judith is a state-juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen and a three-time winner of the League's Stevens Glass Award

Monday, October 12, the fair is open 8am ‘til 5:00 p.m. Please remember that we are now in the fall season and that temperatures fluctuate quite a bit from hour to hour. Wear layers and plan ahead for a lot of fun. You don’t want to feel like leaving because you and your family weren’t dressed for the weather of the day. See you at the Fair!
Sandwich Fair Hall Exhibits There is still plenty of time for you to get art-work, canned goods, crafts, maple, dairy, egg and honey, photography, flowers, baked items, vegetables, quilts etc… entered in the fair. The items and entry papers for these items will be accepted on Friday, October 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Exhibit Halls. Simply bring your items to the fairgrounds during these times, get an exhibitor number assigned to you in the Hodge Building, and go off to the appropriate departments. There are no entry fees to enter items for display and judging. The more than $25,000 in premiums paid out to exhibitors each year are paid out of fair proceeds. People from all over are welcome to enter; you do not need to be from Sandwich, Carroll County, or even New Hampshire to enter exhibits. You can make the process quicker if you stop by the Sandwich Fair Office during office hours or if you go to the registration table in the Hodge Building be prepared to fill out an entry slip with the name and mailing address (including zip code) of each exhibitor. You would be surprised how many premium checks come back to the fair because the mailing address was incomplete or wrong. Please also be able to provide a phone number.
Each department chairperson and their committees can help people with entries for their departments. If you have a specific question that cannot be answered by the premium book, you can call the appropriate chairperson ahead of time (numbers are in the 2009 Sandwich Fair book and on the fair’s website www.thesandwichfair.com); but most people can simply bring the items on Friday evening October 9 and complete all the necessary papers. If you have a 2009 Sandwich Fair Program and Premium Book you can fill out most of the paperwork early and just leave the exhibitor number blank until you check-in. If you need a book, or have numerous entries (more than 10 or 12), you can stop by the Sandwich Fair Office and get a book or pick up the cards that get attached to exhibits (All items should have identification –like an address label- on the back or bottom in case a card gets detached.) The Sandwich Fair Book and entry forms are also available on line at www.thesandwichfair.com
Once you have entered your items, take your family for a stroll and ride in the midway. It is particularly magical when it is fully lit. The rides will be open Friday night, (10/9) from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. for a midway preview. Friday night, it costs nothing to enter the grounds (i.e. free admission for all ages) and you may ride the rides all you wish from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. for just $10. Families have found this a great way to visit with friends and neighbors and enjoy the midway with smaller crowds. Please remember that the exhibit halls will not be open for viewing on Friday night as exhibits are arriving, being set up, and in some cases judged (4-H exhibits must be ready for judges by 6:00 p.m.).
All items entered for exhibit will be judged sometime between 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning when the exhibit halls will open to fairgoers. All items must remain on display until 5:00 p.m. on Monday evening (10/12). No items will be released early! Exhibit pick up is between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 12. At 6:30 p.m. on Monday, all the halls are emptied, cleaned and readied for winter storage which begins on Tuesday morning. The chairpeople and the fair do their best to make sure that items left after 6:30 p.m. are moved to a safe and secure location (like the fair office); but every effort should be made to get items picked up personally (or by a friend or neighbor) on Monday evening. The fair provides security personnel and hall monitors; but items are exhibited at the risk of the exhibitor.
Several thousand items are exhibited each year and it takes a while to tabulate all the prizes in each department, collect all the department books from the chairpeople, double check the figures, add up all the prizes won by each exhibitor, and to write and mail checks. Most years exhibitors receive premium checks before Thanksgiving

Sandwich Fair Grand Street Parade Interested in participating in a long-time tradition of the Sandwich Fair? In just a few days, the Sandwich Fair Grand Street Parade will be making its way through the streets of Sandwich boasting bands, floats, horses, oxen, old cars and tractors – a little bit of everything. Please join others from all over New England who have made the parade the special tradition it is today. Our theme this year is “99 Years of Sandwich Fair Parades". Although the pre-registration period is over, you can still register the day of the Fair at the Parade Booth. The Parade Committee is keeping the identity of the Grand Marshal secret until the parade
Prizes for the parade are often sponsored by local businesses and organizations. One of relatively new sponsors is Hilman Oriental Rugs & Restoration, which is owned and operated by Sandwich resident Randy Hilman. Serving the Lakes Region since 1998, Hilman Oriental Rugs offers collectors and enthusiasts fine, handmade carpets, kilims, and ethnography from tribal, village, and urban Islamlic cultures. His full-service business also specializes in traditional hand-cleaning and restoration of worn and damaged oriental carpets. Hilman Oriental Rugs will be sponsoring the President’s Award, which is awarded to the best decorated entry. In addition to the President’s Award, the parade also has five other major awards: Doris L. Benz, Best in Theme (Floats), Best in Theme (Non-floats), Tish O'Neil, and Jack Burghardt. The Parade Committee would like to thank our very generous sponsors: A&B Lumber, Century 21 Lakes Region Realty, Hilman Oriental Rugs, and the O'Neil Family. Thank-you very much for your support! Although registrations are still accepted the day of the Parade, please note the following times: 1) Entries are accepted until 12:00 noon; 2) For those who pre-registered, please check in at the Parade Booth by 12:00; 3) For those who pre-registered who check in after 12:00 noon., your entry will not be judged; and 4) Due to the size of the parade, they cannot accept any check-ins after 12:30 p.m. Please do not hesitate to contact Mike Yaeger at 284-6443 if you have any questions. Parade entry forms in the parade booth on Sunday, in the Sandwich Fair Book and online at www.thesandwichfair .com.
Baked Goods Department at Sandwich Fair Just a reminder to start those ovens! The Sandwich Fair is only a day away, and the Baked Goods Department is hoping the bakery cases will be chock full this year of wonderful baked goods! This is a perfect event for adults, teens and juniors to get involved in the Fair. Our Annual Baked Goods Auction will be held on Monday, October 12, at 3:30 p.m.. - a great (and delicious event) which benefits the Baked Goods Department. In addition to the premiums listed in the Fair Book, we have special prizes for all the age categories from King Arthur Flour (Whole Wheat Bread), Love Bites (Best Coffee Cake); Jonathan Beede House Bed and Breakfast (Best Apple Pie), and Mocha Rizing (Best Biscotti and Muffins). Thank-you again to all of our sponsors for making the Fair extra special for the Baked Goods Department!
Sandwich Fair Photo Contest Bring your camera, or better yet have everyone in your family bring a camera to the fair. Each year the Sandwich Fair runs a photo contest in order to obtain many wonderful photos of the current year’s fair. The favorite and best photos are awarded prizes. Only two photos per person may be entered (You may send all the photos you wish; but you need to select the two for judging.). SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
The 99th Sandwich Fair was graced by mostly sunny weather and good times. It is now history and preparations are being made for the grand celebration of the fair’s 100th anniversary in 2010.
As I put the finishing touches on this week’s column, it is 3:11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13. All is dark and quiet on the fairgrounds. Not even 12 hours ago the fair was in full swing and families were frolicking having fun. At 5:00 p.m. Monday, the exhibits at the fair closed and by 6:00 p.m., most of the exhibit halls were empty and being swept and prepared for winter storage which will start going in later today. From 5:00 p.m. to about midnight, the clank and clatter of rides and concessions being dismantled was almost continual. It really is quite amazing how many of the rides fold up, lights still on, bright and colorful. By midnight, most of them were boxed up and ready for the convoy of tractor trail cabs waiting to haul them south and west to Pittsfiled, MA (home of Gillette Amusements) and places like Florida for winter. The first convoy is on the road as I write. Trucks will come back and forth the next few days until everything is at its next destination. By week’s end, the fairgrounds will be cleaned up and it will be hard for someone passing through Sandwich to know what took place here this past weekend.
With the end of the Sandwich Fair also comes the official end of our summer and fall tourist season. By the time this paper reaches you on Thursday, the first snow flakes will have fallen, many of the leaves will have blown off the trees, most of our shops and restaurants will close or go to winter hours, and many of our neighbors will be off to their winter homes. You will also notice that this week’s column includes many plans for the upcoming holidays. A new season has begun and it is time to make earnest preparations for winter and to thoroughly enjoy any warm sunny days that come our way.
Sandwich Fair Meeting The Sandwich Fair Association, Inc. will hold a General Membership Meeting and Election of Officers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, in the Crafts Demonstration Building on the Sandwich Fairgrounds. All Sandwich Fair members, chairpeople, and people who would like to be involved with the Sandwich Fair are encouraged and most welcome to attend.
Samuel Wentworth Library The Samuel H. Wentworth Library will resume hours on Thursday, October 15 when it will be open noon to 6:00 p.m.; it will be open 10:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16. The library will be open 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17. On these days, patrons will have to park offsite and walk to the library as Quimby Field Road will be closed. Only foot traffic to the front of the building will be allowed until the road re-opens. Renewals or Questions, please call 284-6665 or e-mail wentworthlib@emlot.com. WiFi is available in the vicinity around the library 24 hours a day.
Come and check out a tree-ific exhibit in ther display case of Historic Tree books, photos and all sorts of seeds and cones. This collection (on loan from Matt Powers) will be on display throughout the rest of October... In November, the library will feature wood-turned items by Robin Dustin. Have a collection you'd like to share? They need something for December and all of 2010. It can be seasonal or not... books, toy cars, old candy wrappers, or whatever! After the meal, is “Saturday Night, Live in Downtown Sandwich”! Several musicians and raconteurs have signed up to perform and there is still some room for an act or two. SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
This week has been pretty much sunny and comfortably warm; but after the cold bitter weather of last week and the winds that took off many of the leaves, we all know that winter is coming. It’s only a matter of time before the ground starts to freeze and gardening activities cease. There is always so much to do and such a limited time to accomplish it, especially as the days get shorter. To offset the thought of coming snow and cold, I always get a couple of hundred new spring bulbs and a few winter pansies to plant as I put my gardens to bed. It gives me hope for new growth and color in a few months. Enjoy all the sunny days we get!
