SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Can you believe that it is November already? The time has already changed to Daylight Savings and frosty nights will now be the norm. Time to get all those driveways markers out and any remaining gardening completed. And of course, there are leaves to rake. At least the sun makes it to the ground brighter in most places as there are very few leaves clinging to the trees and making shade.

This dinner to honor Veterans will be held on Wednesday, November 11th , Veteran’s Day, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sandwich Fire Station. The Giving Meal I wish to commend the Sandwich Federated Church Sunday School for giving us "The Giving Meal" last night at the Methodist Meeting House. It was "giving" all around as we were given a delicious meal; given an opportunity for good conversation with friends; and the proceeds were to be given to Sandwich Fuel Assistance. It is my understanding (and hope) that this will be a monthly event. If so, you will want to be sure to attend. (Lee Quimby Posted this on the Sandwich Board 10/18/09)

They just sent in over $200 worth for the first of 2 collection deadlines for this school year! Keep collecting throughout the winter... the next deadline is in May. And (if you shop at Hannaford's), look for your Hannaford Helps coupon at the end of your shopping receipts and slip them into the Sandwich PTO slot at the Meredith store. Those are worth cash for our school as well!
Thank you to such a supportive community... whether you parked at the school during the Fair, collect Boxtops, or attend our exciting programs, we appreciate all you do!

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
This week of warm sunny weather is such a treat for those of us who still have lots of yard work to accomplish before the snow flies. Every year I have great plans to have all my pre-winter chores done by the time it gets really cold and the ground starts to freeze and get snow-covered. And, every year I am out in the first snowstorm, freezing and scurrying to get everything under cover and secure for winter. Perhaps this warm weather will linger for a few weeks.
Master Plan Survey Results and Forum Please plan on attending a public forum to discuss the “Master Plan Survey Results and Vision for Sandwich’s Future” on Saturday, November 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Sandwich Central School. The forum will review the results of the recent Master Plan Survey that was mailed to all registered voters and property owners, and how the results relate to themes coming out of the two Master Plan update public forums held earlier this year. In combination, these provide good insight into the kind of town people want Sandwich to be over the next 10 – 20 years. After the review, we will discuss and develop ideas on how to best go about achieving this vision for the future. This is an important meeting, so please attend. Refreshments will be provided. The Master Plan Update Committee

Farmer’s Market Saturday mornings from 9 to noon you'll find Booty Farm under the pines by the library offering a full range of fall vegetables including carrots, parsnips, lettuce, arugula, mesclun mix, kale, beets, celery and corn meal. Thanks for supporting local agriculture!
Sustainable Agriculture for a Sustainable Sandwich An ad hoc group of interested people have thus far held two informal meetings under the guise of "building for a more edible Sandwich" using the acronym SASS (Sustainable Agriculture for a Sustainable Sandwich), and hoping that humor will work to call attention to a much more serious issue: Communities across America are awakening to sustainable, local agriculture for all the seasons.
Many towns in New Hampshire as well as those in our neighboring states are ahead of us in developing plans for their own sustainable agriculture. Now we learn it is being recommended that each community establish an Agricultural Commission which will be able to take advantage of whatever unique characteristics supporting local agriculture can be found within its borders.
The ad hoc no name group sees an opportunity to turn over all of the thoughts and ideas it has developed to date to a legitimate functionary and seeks your help in writing a formal proposal to that effect to be included in the Warrant of this year's Town meeting. We will be holding a meeting at the Benz Center, 7 pm, November 17 to discuss preparing a proposal.
Anyone wanting to know more about Agriculture Commissions in NH can go to http://extension.unh.edu/Agric/AgComm/NHAGCom.htm#AG_Int . That website also has a link to a handbook titled "Creating an Agriculture Commission" and a powerpoint presentation on the subject. For more information contact Bob Wright, 284-7708.
Community Woodshare Shawn Papp writes: Thank you for the great start to last years Community Woodshare. I hope this year can be as successful. There have been a couple of deliveries of wood already this year and hopefully we can do more. Through many monetary donations, volunteerism and coordination, we were able to supplement many households with extra wood. In one case, there was a family that had extra wood and a way to deliver it to a person who needed an extra cord. This was the simplest case. On another occasion, we had a name of someone in need and a name of someone willing to donate time, labor and transportation. This was also an easy case and simply required phone calls. Much of the money spent last year was put towards the transportation of donated logs which were cut and split by volunteers and the purchase of wood for delivery from local providers. The not for profit entity 'GALA' that we used to manage monetary donations,(Global Awareness Local Action)was a great asset to facilitate this endeavor. Our account for the purchase of firewood is currently at $399, which isn't a huge amount, but at least it will buy almost two cords worth. Currently, there are about eight cords of seasoned wood at the stockpile (Recycling Center). This pile was created solely from the volunteer efforts of the townspeople of Sandwich and Tamworth.
Anyone that is in urgent need of assistance, should simply stop by the Town Hall and fill out a voucher. That person could then go to the stockpile and give the voucher to Marilyn, who would tell them where to get the wood from and how much to take. From experience, it seems that the most efficient and cost effective way to do Woodshare was simply to connect people in need of wood with those that had a little extra to spare. A third phone call to someone that had a way to transport it, sealed the deal. It was nice to have the option to utilize local businesses that deal in firewood. This was simply a phone call and a delivery address.
Incidentally, The Department of Energy and Planning in Concord recently called to ask about this program. Sandwich's example could possibly be used as a template for other towns in the state and with the help of GALA, our reach could go well beyond town borders.
If you would like to help continue this program by making a monetary donation, please send a check payable to GALA-WOODSHARE. If you would like to ensure that your donation goes to only Sandwich Residents please write "Sandwich" on the bottom of your check and the money will be put towards Sandwich townspeople only. Your Donation can be mailed to: Community Woodshare, P.O. Box 325, Sandwich, NH 03227
If you would like to be put on the list as a wood "recipient", "donor" or "transporter" please call 707-7316
If you have split wood and would like to donate it, please feel free to add to the stockpile at any time. If you have other questions about this program, please contact the Selectmen's Office at the Town Hall or call 707-7316. If you have new thoughts on how we can do better, (ie. energy audits, etc.) contact the Energy committee with those ideas. Thanks again, Sandwich.
Flu Vaccine Many people went to the Benz Center for the VNA Flu Clinic, only to find they ran short of vaccine. In the past, they've only done 40-45 people so all they were allotted was enough to inoculate 50 people. They started at 1:00 pm and before 1:30 pm they had run out. If you've been unable to get a flu shot and would like to be put on a waiting list, please call the VNA at 569-2729 and tell the receptionist. They will notify you when vaccine becomes available. This is for the seasonal flu vaccine and not H1N1 (Swine Flu.)
Small Hands Fundraiser The Sandwich Children's Center is holding their 2nd annual mall Hands fundraiser...if interested please read on... For a catalog or questions call 284-7014 or shop online www.forsmallhands.com Last year's event raised over $250 and allowed the teachers to buy garden tools, cooking gadgets and classroom supplies that they used throughout the year.
The Small Hands catalog is put out by the Montessori folks. It is full of toys, books, tools, games, musical instruments, craft supplies and science projects that help kids learn and have fun. The items purchased from here last year have proven to be high-quality and durable. One family found useful things like scissors and the enamelware mini-mugs, as well as the fun Animal Upon Animal stacking game and the ever-changing Mosaic Puzzle.
Here are Four Ways you can help Support the Sandwich Children's Center: 1. Place an order through the SCC office no later than Wednesday, November 18th . The Center will receive a 15% credit of the total for their "Group Order." This means that you can get some shopping done, your kids can get some quality items for home, and the Center can get a credit to buy needed supplies. 2. Order online or over the phone. You can provide the Center's order code #223382 and the Center will receive 10% credit to their account. 3. Anyone you know can fill out an order form or order online with the SCC customer code #223382 to benefit kids at the Center. Share the fun with co-workers, friends, grandparents, cousins, or whoever likes toys and books! 4. Take a tag from the Wish Tree at SCC and add the item to your order. Teachers will fill out wish tags for specific items for the classrooms, and you can buy one of these gifts as a donation to the center.
This is an easy fundraiser. You get to buy really wonderful gifts without running from store to store, and the teachers at SCC get to do some shopping of their own. Thank you to each of you for all the things you already do to support the Center! You might find that shopping from this catalog is a fun way to help out! The Center will distribute your purchases when they arrive.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Harvest Supper and Astronomy Night The Sandwich Central School PTO welcomes all from the community to the annual Harvest Supper at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at the school. It is always a fabulous feast and a great way for the community to celebrate fall with the families who have children at our elementary school.
This is a well attended community event. Please bring a dish to share and your own place settings—plates, flatware, and cups. The PTO will provide apple cider, bread and butter.
Following the Harvest Supper this year, there is a special event. Come join the New Hampshire Astronomical Society, and learn more about the planets, stars, and what unique things are happening in our night sky. The dinner is rain or shine; but if it rains on the 20, the astronomy program will be held on Saturday, November 21 at dusk. Telescopes are provided; but please feel free to bring your own and become better acquainted with how to use your home telescope.
Food Bank and Baskets The Outreach Committee of the Sandwich Federated Church is collecting donations of Thanksgiving items and cash for Thanksgiving baskets which will be delivered to families in need in the Sandwich area early next week. The boxes will contain all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner. People may donate non-perishable items or send checks (Federated Church of Sandwich, memo: Thanksgiving Baskets) to the church at PO Box 267, Center Sandwich, NH 03227. Money received will be used to buy perishable items such as chickens, turkeys, and fresh vegetables. Donations may be left at either of the churches.
For more information or to suggest a family in need of a box, please call Susan Davies at 284-7413 or Jennifer Wright at 998-9460. All donations, including coupons, are most appreciated. Donations can also be left with Jennifer Wright in the Sandwich Selectman’s Office.
The Federated Church would like to remind you that as the busy holiday season approaches - there are many people in this area who rely on the Food Bank in Tamworth. People who volunteer there have told them that there are shortages of food to give out. Food may be left in the box in the front hall of the Town Hall or in either church building, Methodist or Baptist. A dedicated committee does frequent pickups and transports the food to Tamworth. So let's remember others when we do our grocery shopping.

American Legion Auxiliary CiCi Yaeger writes: Perhaps most of you do not know that we still have The American Legion Auxiliary in Sandwich. Last time I checked there were only 3 of us paying dues in Sandwich Auxiliary. If we didn't pay our annual dues, it would be no more. Perhaps we could revive it for a good cause? You women out there, married to veterans, or daughter of veteran, ( I believe there may be other ways to join) could all join and it would be an avenue to help our servicemen. Ethel Clifford is still in charge. Let me know. Cynthia R. Yeager, Cici, Associate Broker, Bean Group, Cici's cell: 677-2032, home 284-6443

Two Gentleman Band and Sweet Life Revue This Saturday evening at the Barnstormer’s theater you can be treated not only to the lively and diverting Two Man Gentlemen Band but also the sweet harmonies and skilled strumming of Sweet Life Revue
The formation of the Sweet Life Revue is a happy twist of fate. After being near neighbors in North Sandwich for many years, Katie O'Connell, Kathy Carnie, and Roger Sorlien finally met musically at one of Ellen Carlson's wonderful fiddle camps. It wasn't long before they sidled away from the fiddlers that weekend to work on favorite folksongs with three-part vocal harmonies. The addition of Chris Buerk's tenor vocals and smooth instrumentals has given the group a huge new range of possibilities. Rachel Sorlien is a semi-regular member of Sweet Life Revue and her fiddling is the tie that binds its different song styles together. Sweet Life Revue is striving to create a rich and tight blend of voices while maintaining the old time feel of neighbors and family coming together for an evening of song. For the better part of four years now they have been honing their craft and performing at local venues. Most of the songs you will hear on November 21st were arranged especially for this show.
Tickets are available at the door and at The Other Store in Tamworth, or by calling 323-8104.
Don't forget that if you bring donations for the Community Food Center you will be entered in a raffle for tickets to the Austin Lounge Lizards in May.
Chicken Art Fans Hello art and chicken fans, As part of The Community School's on-going effort to showcase the work of local artists in their lobby, they're hosting a display of chicken art. This could include paintings, collage, photos, sculpture or more--all with a chicken theme. They are looking for contributions to this display of locally-crafted or other works.
All artworks should be brought to The Community School on either Wednesday, December 2 or Thursday, December 3 between 9 am - 5pm. Original works should include the artist's name, title, medium, and price (or NFS). While work does not need to be framed, it must be ready for hanging. This display will run through January. All work should be picked up on Wednesday, January 27 or Thursday, January 29 between 9-5.
If you would be willing to add your chicken art to their temporary collection, joining Nicole Maher-Whiteside, Juno Lamb, Lianne Prentice, and other chicken-minded artists, please call 323-7000..
For those who are interested in visiting this fun display, come by any time during school hours (8-4ish). Thursday lunches are especially good times to enjoy delicious locally-raised food while taking in the art. Only a few weeks left to see Wendy Ketchum's glorious collection of prints and paintings inspired by her wooly friends at Schoolhouse Farm. Come by!
Community Woodshare Anyone that is in urgent need of assistance getting wood to heat their home should simply stop by the Town Hall and fill out a voucher.

The Outreach Committee of the Sandwich Federated Church assembled and delivered Thanksgiving Baskets earlier this week. The boxes contained all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner. The need continues past Thanksgiving Day; people may donate non-perishable items or send checks (Federated Church of Sandwich, memo: Thanksgiving Baskets/Food Bank) to the church at PO Box 267, Center Sandwich, NH 03227. Money received is used to buy perishable items such as chickens, turkeys, and fresh vegetables. Donations may be left at either of the churches. A dedicated committee does frequent pickups and transports the food to the Community Food Bank in Tamworth at St. Andrews. So let's remember others when we do our grocery shopping.

Come by!
Community Woodshare Anyone that is in urgent need of assistance getting wood to heat their home should simply stop by the Town Hall and fill out a voucher.

Community Food Center The CFC in Tamworth has been healthier than most Food Pantries in recent months, but the effects of the struggling economy are starting to hit home there, too. In addition to diced tomatoes, cake and frosting mixes, salsa, shampoo, toothpaste, and dishwasher detergent, we need the basics - canned fruit and vegetables, meat, and 'hearty' soups, among others.

Sandwich 4-H Clubs Woodworking with Bob Wright for ages 8-18 is a lot of fun and the kids make some very in nice projects. This winter Bob is offering a couple of tool and woodworking programs for 4-Hers and members of the community. The first program would be parents and kids working together to learn how to make a useful knife for the kitchen, hunting and wood-working. The class will include a lesson in sharpening and maintaining knives. The second program is making a lamp out of an old lamp or materials that can be wired and turned into a lamp. Participants will learn how to mount and wire the hardware. Bob plans to do these programs after the holidays; but he will consider doing a program before Christmas if someone wants to make a gift. In the Spring Bob wants to work with kids and adults to make useful garden tools out of old broken ones. These programs will be free for 4-H members and the parent helping them; community members are asked to pay a nominal fee. Please call Bob at 284-7708 for details.
