MARCH 4, 2010

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

Late winter is making itself know with wet sloppy snow. This last week it has been surprising to see places where bands of snow have covered the ground with almost 2 feet of snow and other places only a short distance away where the ground was nearly bare. I drove to Conway on Saturday mid-day. Between Center Sandwich and Route 16, I passed though light snow, heavy rain, sunshine, blinding snow and slick roads in South Tamworth and snow, sleet and sunshine again by the time I got to West Ossipee. The rest of the way the roads were just wet and North Conway had almost bare ground. The trip home that evening was almost the same but in reverse. How Odd!

Despite the mud and slush, there is some good snow for winter activities and for the early spring ones as well. Every day more and more taps are being put out on the maple trees and very soon the sweet smell of maple syrup will fill the air around sap houses. The days  now have over 2 additional hours of sunlight than they did back in December and the spring bulbs are trying to find their way to the surface.

Meet and Greet the Police
On March 6 at the Benz Center there will be a chance to meet and greet the Sandwich Police. There will be a Pot Luck Supper from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (Please RSVP Cindy at 284-7066 because of limited seating). From 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., there will be a walk in meet and greet with everyone welcome! Bring the kids! Refreshments will be available.

This event is being sponsored by Jennifer Wright and Cindy Handford.

Town Elections and Meeting
Town and School Board Elections will be held on Tuesday, March 9 from 10 am to 7 pm and the polling location has been returned to Town Hall. This is due in large part to diligent work by the Town Hall Building Committee and their recommendations for alterations to the meeting room. After a site visit in late December, Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Manning has determined the Town Hall is a suitable polling place for all voters including voters with disabilities. Voters who may be away or unable to come to the polls on election day may request an absentee ballot in writing or at the Town Clerk/Tax Collector's office prior to election day.

Town Meeting in scheduled for March 10. Elections will be held at Town Hall on Tuesday, March 9th from 10am-7pm. The legislative portion of Town Meeting will be held at Sandwich Central School on Wednesday, March 10 at 7:00 pm. Copies of the proposed 2010 budget are available at Town Hall. The 2009 Town Report is now available.

Winni-Spinners
If you are currently a spinner or would like to be, you are invited to a meeting of the Winni-Spinners which is the local chapter of the New Hampshire Spinners and Dyers. A group of 5 or 6 women in the group have for many years been meeting weekly on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to noon at homes in Moultonborough, Tuftonboro, and Wolfeboro. In recent weeks, some people from Sandwich and Holderness have joined and next Monday’s meeting (3/8) will be held at the Sandwich Central Fire Station. Diane Johnson (284-7168) is the host of this meeting. Please feel free to bring a spinning wheel or drop spindle if you have one, or you may just come with some handwork or a desire to learn. The Winni-spinners are the group who do a Sheep to Shawl demonstration each year on Sunday of the Sandwich Fair

Ice Skating
Hello everyone, I have bad news for the skaters in sandwich. The Ice Rink is closed until further notice. The warm weather has taken it's toll on the ice. Please do not try and skate on the rink because the liner is showing through in many spots and it will cause damage to the future of our skating rink. Should our weather change for the colder the rink will be re-examined, and I will post if it will re-open. Also, do not skate on the town pond! It is a spring fed pond and there are many thin spots on it that you could fall through especially now that our days are getting longer. Thank you! Spring is on the way and I will update new activities for all ages in the coming weeks.  Porter Moore , Interim Park and Rec Director

Booty Family Fund
Tim Miner writes: In response to inquiries and offers regarding ways to help the Booty Family during Peter’s illness, a bank account has been established @ MVSB. It is for the Booty's unrestricted use to help offset the myriad costs associated with facing this fierce ordeal. Thankfully many of the medical costs will be covered, but there are expenses for travel, parking, meals, lodging - just to mention a few. Peter's care will continue for some time after they return home, with many trips to Boston and who-knows-where-else; and throughout this there will, of course, be significant income lost.

Here's how it works: the account is named "Booty Family Fund", but (please note) checks should be made out to Diane because it is her name on the account (for technical reasons Tim Miner’s is as well - full disclosure). Send them to: Tim Miner @ 106 Miner Rd., Ctr. Sandwich, NH 03227; his cell # is 707-0856. Tim will deposit them so that Diane does not have to deal with that. Tim will provide Diane & Peter with a list of those who contribute, without dollar amounts. If you wish that your donation remain anonymous, let Tim know or take it directly to the bank. Diane will have a debit card and checks to access the funds. Alternately, you can deliver checks to Tim, or take them directly to the Moultonborough MVSB office. If you want to donate cash, please take it directly to the bank. For all that has been offered, done, and wished - know that the depth of their gratitude is on-beyond-bottomless.

Neighbor to Neighbor
The Neighbor to Neighbor program is still active - this is a fuel assistance program for residents of Sandwich that was started a few years ago.  While this is not a Town-sponsored program, information about it is available in the Selectmen's Office - 284-7701

Community Food Center
The CFC in Tamworth appreciates all the support from the Sandwich Community. The winter months and the economy are hit home. Congregate Meals
All folks age 60 and older are invited to join others in the community for a hot lunch. Congregate meals are held at noon in the Benz Center every Wednesday. A little early or a tad late doesn’t matter…, you are welcome to join old friends and meet some new
ones. All are welcome. Enjoy a home-cooked meal that you don’t have to cook.  Hope to see you next Wednesday.

The group will discuss meeting times and goals. Dog obedience, positive training techniques, Rally-O, carting, agility, flyball, grooming, health, and showmanship will be taught and practiced. Building and Fire Permits
The snow is rapidly disappearing. In light of this, the Board of Selectmen officially lifted the "Building Permit Inspection Moratorium"; and the Sandwich Fire Department is now requiring that anyone wishing to burn outside must now get a fire permit.

Jim Mykland, Sandwich’s Forest Fire Warden writes: With a Fire Permit, you may burn brush under five inches in diameter and untreated scrap wood. The wood can not have paint or stain and not be pressure treated. No other material can be burned, it must be disposed of properly. With a Fire Permit, you may burn between 5pm and 9am and the fire must be extinguished by 9am. You can not leave the fire to burn itself out. You may burn, with a permit, if it is raining out during the day, but you must completely extinguish the fire if it stops raining. Be sure to read the permit for other rules that apply.

Permits can be obtained at the North Sandwich Store in North Sandwich and at Mocha Rizing and the Town Hall in Center Sandwich during regular business hours.
Please use common sense; don't burn when it's dry and don't burn when it's windy. If that little voice inside your head, or more likely your wife, says it's not a good day to burn, pay attention to it.

If you missed church and want to hear this week’s sermon go to http://www.sandwichchurch.org/> and click on "Sermon" to listen to the sermon. Martin Glenday hopes to make this  "Podcast" available weekly for those who are not able to attend the service in person.

If anyone needs spiritual care, please call the church office at 284-6151 and leave word to that effect.

Sandwich Business Group
The next meeting of the Sandwich Business Group will be 8:30 a.m. at Mocha Rizing on Monday, April 5. The public website is  www.discoversandwich.com.  All Sandwich business owners are welcome and are encouraged to join.

For the Second Cup Conversation on Monday, April 5th Don Sutton will give a presentation entitled "A Window into Your Business" which will provide you with tools to critically analyze how successfully you are identifying and meeting the needs of potential customers. This presentation is an out-branch of the course Don teaches at Plymouth State University and was well received at a breakfast meeting for the Squam Lakes Area Chamber in February. Mark your calendars for this enlightening and stimulating presentation!

Baseball and Poetry
Sandwich Poet and Sandwichlot© founder Tim Muskat will conduct a
poetry-on-baseball/baseball-on-poetry interactive workshop for boys and
girls in grades 4-8 at the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth on Wednesday,
April 14 from 7 to 8 p.m. All would-be poetry and baseball lovers are
welcome, though, cautions Tim, “we’re really in the market for kids who want
to play at and fiddle with a little of both.” Workshop participants will
explore connections between poetry and baseball; unravel a bit of the
poetry-like physics of baseball and the baseball-like physicality of poetry;
and, for the pure joy of it, dabble delightedly in the two art forms -- by
learning (on the one hand) how to throw a proper fastball and (on the other)
by getting intimately acquainted with the hanging-curveball nature of
baseball haiku.

In addition to diced canned tomatoes, cake and frosting mixes, salsa, shampoo, toothpaste, and dishwasher detergent, they need the basics - canned fruit and vegetables, meat, and 'hearty' soups, among others.

Congregate Meals
All folks age 60 and older are invited to join others in the community for a hot lunch. Congregate meals are held at noon in the Benz Center every Wednesday. A little early or a tad late doesn’t matter…, you are welcome to join old friends and meet some new ones. All are welcome. Enjoy a home-cooked meal that you don’t have to cook.  Hope to see you next Wednesday.

Quaker Meeting
Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. the North Sandwich Friends gather at the Quaker Meetinghouse which is located at the convergence of Quaker-Whiteface, Brown Hill, and Stevenson Hill Roads about a half mile up the road from the Durgin Covered Bridge.  Children are welcome and child care is provided.

Copies can be made of all paperwork so originals can be returned that evening. Please call Diane Johnson (284-7168) if you would like to attend or if you need more information. The group will discuss meeting times and goals. Dog obedience, positive training techniques, Rally-O, carting, agility, flyball, grooming, health, and showmanship will be taught and practiced. Youths do not need a dog to attend as there are almost always extra dogs available. The Dog Program is designed for 4-H members age 8 to 18.
