MARCH 5, 2009

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

March has finally arrived; and true to the old saying “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb”, we have some new fresh snow. The snow doesn’t bother me much at this point; but I really would love to be able to walk from the house to the barn without needing ice grips! We’ll all enjoy the snow as much as we can for as long as it remains and/or keeps coming. The days are getting longer and by the time April 1 rolls around, it would sure be great to start seeing grass and comfortable sunny days. Happy March!

Ladies Aid
The Ladies of the Federated Church of Sandwich will gather on Thursday, March  12  at 10:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Methodist Meetinghouse. The workshop for the morning will be clipping Campbell’s Soup labels for a mission project. Sue Speers is the Convener. Cecelia Hansen and Donna Johnson will be the hostesses and providing dessert and beverages; people should bring a sandwich for their lunch. Marion Blackshear will lead devotions. After lunch, Diane Johnson of Soft Touch Farm in Sandwich will do a demonstration of needle-felting. Ladies may make a complimentary flower pin for themselves if they choose. All are welcome to attend.

The Sandwich Woman’s Club will hold it’s March meeting at Bucky’s Restaurant on Route 109 South in Moultonborough on Wednesday, March 25 at noon.. If you would like to attend and are not called, please call Diane Johnson (284-7168) or Pam Elliott (284-6623)

Master Plan Public Forums
Eighty five people recently attended 2 public forums to learn about the proposed update to the Sandwich Master Plan.  The forums were conducted by the Master Plan Update Subcommittee of the Sandwich Planning Board.  The objective was to ensure that townspeople fully understand the proposed program so they can vote at the March 11 Town Meeting on an article to appropriate $42,500 for the 2009 work program.

Both events started with a brief overview of the current status of the work program and then opened up for extensive Q&A sessions.  Master Plan Chairman Carroll Bewley and Forum Moderator Lee Quimby both agreed that the events were a tremendous success and thanked people for turning out.

For those who could not attend, a detailed Q&A document is still available from the Town Hall, the North Sandwich Store, the Wentworth Library and Mocha Rizing.  Additionally, copies may be down loaded from the Town's web site: "town.sandwich.nh.us," then clicking onto the Planning Board's page.

British Royal Houses

This final International Night of the 2009 series takes place at the Benz Center on Friday, March 13.  A social time begins at 6:00 p.m. (BYOB), and your tour begins at 6:30 p.m.  Dinner will follow the slide presentation.  Reserve your place for hors d’oeuvres and dinner catered by Don Brown of the Corner House Inn.  Send your check by March 9, 2009, to Sandwich Senior Resources, P.O. It is an honest account of the bisexuality of both this great man and his daughter.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

Last weekend’s warm and sunny days were certainly assurance that spring is not far away. It is truly amazing how quickly snow can melt when the sun, warm breezes, a little rain, and 40-50 degree weather combine. When the wooden planter by my mailbox melted out of the snowbank on Sunday, I began contemplating when I could plant it. I know silk flowers will add color and won’t be bothered by the cold; but I am thinking live plants. By the first day of spring, I’ll have color in it (silk or real) providing that it stays uncovered.

Monday morning’s snow was a reminder that winter is still here.I was swimming at an indoor pool here in Sandwich early Monday morning. The room and pool were warm; but outside it was like one of those e-mail cards with changing winter scenes. Each of the dozen or so glass doors offered a beautiful view. Three were particularly impressive. The eastern most doors highlight a Tamarac tree. Chickadees were flying to and from bird feeders and then coming back to the tree to eat and clean their beaks; flocks of small finches would gently waft in from time to time and join them. Another set of doors to the south feature a crab apple tree. Bluejays flying from that to the Tamarac and to the feeders and back again; it was like a symphony.  The western doors frame a well shaped tall spruce; the dark branches really contrasted with the snow and it looked like an electronic Christmas card.

We just need to enjoy what each day brings. The early change of time to daylight savings will help most of us see more of the day and give us light into the evening hours. I really look forward to spring cleaning and tending my gardens again.

The Tao Yin of Yoga
It is probably safe to say that most Western yoga classes are hatha based--hatha meaning that we join the breath with the physical postures, or asanas, practiced in the course of an hour or two. Whether you take a gentle or vigorous class--Ashtanga, Iyengar, Vinyasa flow, or Anusara-- the practice is often quite muscular, heating the body as muscles are alternately worked and stretched, and the instructor guides students to breathe deeply in time with the movements. Most of my classes follow such a format as well, knowing that most Western yoga students want to "work" and know they've worked during the course of a class. Over the past dozen or so years I, like many of my students, have sought out the classes that challenge my muscles and my focus, as well as invite the breath as the sustaining element of the practice.

Westerners love the Yang--the challenging muscly poses, the heat energy and resulting sweat that comes from a vigorous class, and I admit, I love it too. But recently I have found Yin yoga, a deeply insightful and challenging practice, that moves the breath and our chi energy beyond our topcoat of muscles. In a Yin class, poses are long held in passive postures and deeply stretch the fascia, or connective tissues, that exist throughout the body, and concentrated most significantly at our joints, often where we feel stress and pain as we grow older or because of injury, misuse, or lack of use. Let's face it: our tissues have issues! In the Yin class, focus is on stimulating the "ki" or "chi" energy flowing through our meridian systems--much like acupuncture and accupressure do. Moving that vital energy throughout the body can turn back the clock, so to speak, leaving your joints more flexible, your muscles and connective tissues more supple, and
your whole body and mind alive with breath awareness and your natural vital energy. If you are interested in complementing your yang workouts with a yin yoga practice, this is the class you have been waiting for!

90-minute Yin Yoga class beginning Sunday March 15th, 4:30-6 p.m. $65 for 6 weeks of classes, or walk in for $15 per class

Call Katie at 284-6281 for more information, or email her at dragonflyoga@gmail.com The swim is on!

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

Amid the gloom of the national news and the economy, it was a delight this past Saturday to see and hear some cheerful optimistic souls on stage at the Town Hall. The play was well attended. A group of local parents and kids got together to put on a ½ hour play “The Snowman Who Overstayed”. It was a simple play about the hope and beauty of spring. The costumes and props were clever and fun and it was a joy to see families working together to celebrate the change of season. After a brief intermission, several of the young people read poems and played music. Inspiring!

Sometimes, I think the press, and our political leaders and CEO’s could benefit from simple things like a sweet play, music from the heart, spring days, sap trickling into a metal bucket and the aroma of  hot maple syrup. I suppose many of them are so wound up in the complexities of the world that they couldn’t relax enough to enjoy the life we live here in Sandwich every day. What a shame for them.

I hope you are able to see the signs of spring as it unfurls from the melting snow. Celebrate good things and Smile!
