SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
It’s 2010! Can you believe it? It just doesn’t seem possible that the wonderful New Year’s Celebration at Teacup Lake could have been over 10 years ago. At that time we were welcoming the new millennium with much small town charm and excitement. It was magical! Here we are just 10 years later and the world seems so much more complicated and such a different place.
Hopefully, the new decade brings us some great opportunities and blessings. A fair measure of peace, honesty, and goodness would also be helpful and appreciated. May this year and this decade be great for you and your families.

What is the Church? During the early part of 2010, Rev. David Morgan will be discussing "What is the Church" during Sunday morning service at 10:00 a.m. in the Methodist Meetinghouse. As we know, the church and its relevancy to our lives has changed dramatically over the last couple of generations. You are cordially invited to learn how the church and its people will be affected by the change. Rev. Morgan will discuss some of what he sees in the Sandwich community and its relationship to The Federated Church. Remember, casual winter dress is always appropriate during the cold weather and we are sure you will receive a friendly smile to warm you upon arrival for morning service. If you need an invitation, please consider this as your personal one - you are always welcome at The Federated Church and we look forward to seeing you on Sunday mornings.
A Wish and a Note from the Sandwich Fair The Sandwich Fair Association would like to wish residents and friends a happy and prosperous New Year! As we reflect over the past year we recall many positive happenings. As many of you know, we bought the Forbes property and worked with the Historical Society to preserve parts and pieces of the house, turning the property into a lot that can be used by the Fair as well as by the community for parking. We worked with the Sandwich Police Department to provide a safe place for the children of Sandwich to skateboard and rollerblade on the pavement at the South Gate. We also continued our improvements throughout the grounds with the electrical and plumbing; removed an old trailer and replaced it with a small, tidy office; and cleaned up some fill that had been dumped years and years ago into some wetlands. The community enjoys use of the land and buildings, as it always has, from walking dogs and 4-H programs to Old Home Week activities. We overall had a pretty good year!
We’re extremely excited as we prepare for our 100th Anniversary Fair. A poster contest, special ribbons and who knows what else will make this a special fair. Maybe some suggestions will come from you to make it an extraordinary event; we’re all ears! You can contact any of the Directors or call the Fair Office (284-7062).
Unfortunately we must now ask for your help with one, not so positive, issue we have been dealing with over the last year. We have had numerous instances of vandalism and destruction of Fair property. We have had broken windows in the ticket booths and electrical building, individuals smoking in and about our buildings as well as in our pile of shavings (used for animal bedding during the Fair) and now misuse of property, including our picnic tables and benches. We would like to ask everybody to please help us keep an eye out for the individuals who are vandalizing Fair property. We don’t ever want to be forced to close the Fair property to the public but continued misuse of property as we’ve seen this year is going to force us to respond. We know there are a very few individuals who are causing this vandalism but the potential for great loss exists. If you see misuse occurring, please notify the Sandwich Police Department. They are well aware of all of these issues and are looking for help to curb this behavior.
Please have a great 2010. We look forward to seeing you at our 100th Anniversary Fair in October! Happy New Year! The Sandwich Fair Association

A Thank You Note from the Chiefs The spirit of the holiday season is alive and well in Sandwich, as you have once again shown your generosity. The Annual North Sandwich Store/ Sandwich Police Department is over. The toys were collected, wrapped and delivered. This year we saw an increase in need, no doubt a sign of the times. 18 families and 41 children were delivered presents and holiday cheer!
There are several people we would like to thank for their help to make the toy drive a success! First to Mike Shattuck and Lois Carmody at the North Sandwich Store for their help and wanting to continue the tradition of the Toy Drive, and the addition of the raffling of the World's Largest Christmas Stocking. You both play a big role in the drive's success, thank-you. Second, to the Federated Church of Sandwich. Thank-you for your very generous donation to the Toy Drive. The Toy Drive was the beneficiary of the monthly "Giving Meal" that the the church hosts. Third, to Becker and Mayer (publishers) for their generous donation of toys and books. To Kohl's Department Store, and Store manager Rich True and Ashley Mann for their generous donation of 50 children's books. To Osh Kosh B'gosh and Store manager Jean Bolstridge at the Tilton Store for graciously providing us with a discount for the Toy Drive purchases.
To the Sandwich "wrappers" Alyssa Floyd, Kyla Wyman, Carol Wyman, Diane Floyd, Janet Brown, Carrie Fair, Rich Young, Nina Eaton, PL, Betty Webster, Dale Mackay, Kristin Nethercote, Lois Carmody, Mike Shattuck, John Rowan, Jennifer Wright and Sharon Teel. To Carol Wyman, who for three years now has taken the lead, and made this Toy drive her mission. Carol has sought out sponsors, pursued discounts, does all of the shopping for the children, and really makes sure and takes to heart that each child is provided for, she organizes the toys and does the work, that from the outside makes the Toy Drive look effortless, when in fact it is anything but. And lastly, to the Sandwich residents for being so generous! It is because of your generosity that we are able to have this toy drive. All of the presents were delivered by the Sandwich Police Department on December 22 and 23 to smiling faces! Thank-you all again for your help! Wishing all of you a Happy and Safe 2010! Chief Rich Young, (ret), Chief Doug Wyman, Sandwich Police Department.

Sand not Salt The Road Agent has reported people are still helping themselves to the salt pile. Salt is not available for residents to use. Sand is available for personal residential use by Sandwich Residents only. The sand is not available for use by plowing contractors within or outside of Sandwich. Residents may fill five 5-gallon (or smaller) buckets per visit. Sandwich Master Plan Update Public Forum The third public forum for updating the Sandwich Master Plan was held at the Sandwich Central School on November 14, 2009. The forum began with a review of the results of the written survey that had been mailed to every registered voter in Sandwich, and to non-resident property owners. Key themes from the survey and two prior forums indicate citizens place a high value on preserving the Town’s natural resources, rural character and New England village appearance. They are comfortable with reasonably paced development and small business growth as long as it maintains these values. People are generally happy with Town management and services provided, see some need for better housing alternatives, particularly for seniors, and support expanding access to trails and preserving open space. The complete survey results are available on the Town website, tos@cyberpine.net, and a printed copy of same is available for review at Town Hall. Printed copies of the summary results (the nearly 2,300 written comments have been consolidated into groups in this version) have also been placed at the North Sandwich Store, the Wentworth Library and at Town Hall.
Next, attendees divided into groups to discuss two of the high-interest topics: protecting rural character and village character. The rural character group first defined what it is that makes up “rural character,” suggested several ways in which it might be protected, then participated in an exercise to develop a hypothetical 80 acre parcel using a technique known as Open Space Development. The exercise provided an opportunity to consider current zoning requirements and what the resulting “build out” could bring, versus potential changes that might better protect rural character.
The village character group felt that the two most important features of a “village” are its visual appearance and its role as a center of people activity – where they can shop, go to the Post Office and town offices, etc., but also socially interact. They identified several “tensions” as a result of competing objectives. For example, people wanted to preserve the historical character of the village, without having it become a museum. Additional retail businesses and professional offices, such as a doctor or dentist, were felt desirable, although should not cause significantly more vehicle traffic. Furthermore, development in the Center is inhibited by a sewer system that is currently operating at maximum capacity, and almost no village lots meet current building ordinance lot size and setback requirements. This led to a discussion of whether different zoning standards should apply to the village, and whether additional buildings of similar character might be sited in the village while preserving the valued open spaces.
The Master Plan Update Committee believes that through the forums and surveys the people have clearly outlined their vision for Sandwich’s future, and work is proceeding on developing the plan to bring that about. However, we welcome any additional thoughts and suggestions you may have, and invite you to attend any of our committee meetings, typically held on the second and fourth Monday of each month, beginning at 5:00 PM at Town Hall. However, we sometimes alter the schedule, so check with the Selectmen Office to verify that we’re meeting.
Lego Club A Lego Club will be held on Wednesdays at the Wentworth Library starting in January 2010. The parents organizing this are looking for donations of Legos, which may be dropped off at the library or Robin Tolles can pick them up! She can be reached at 284-7374.

Exercise with Mio Happy New Year to everyone! Every year more than 50% of American people decide to lose weight and eat healthy. After a couple of weeks, people start to drop off and start to make excuses. Mio Kerr encourages you to make this year little special. Make small changes that you can make into your daily routine. Eat more food (a lot of people are not eating enough) but little more healthy food. It's better to eat small 5-6 meals a day than 3 big meals. Stop feeling guilty when you eat not so healthy food. Move at least 30min a day; put exercise in your daily to do list. It's so easy to put into your day if you know how to. You don't have to do one big session, you can do 5min at a time. You just need to know how to lift weights with good form and find some cardio exercise you enjoy. If you need some tips and have some questions about exercise please e-mail miokerr@hotmail.com or come to her class at Town Hall on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00am to 9:00 am. The group really has fun and it is a very relaxed setting so why not try one and make your 2010 to be a happy, healthy and feel good year.

The Cross Country Ski Trails are being groomed again on the fairgrounds and are in great shape. The Sandwich Fair hopes everyone enjoys using them and they thank those who keep them groomed. Please remember when using the trails that snow-shoers and walkers should stay to the side of the groomed trail and any deposits left by your dog(s) should be removed. Inter-Lakes Nordic Team, Moultonborough Nordic Team and the Sandwich Rec. Dept. all use the trails for practice for meets, so please be respectful.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Winter doesn’t stop many around Sandwich; it just means different activities. On any given day, you’ll see X-C skiers out on the groomed trails on Quimby Field and the Sandwich Fairgrounds. Living where I do, I get to constantly watch the various skiers who are out daily on the field where the rides and midway set up at fair time. During the morning and after lunch, Nordic skiers make leisurely laps and occasionally stop to make a snowman. When school lets out ski-skaters from the local high school teams are out in their sleek gear zipping along the trail. Most of the skiers make happy conversation and it brightens my day to hear them swoosh and giggle.
In the village, people are out skating on the town rink and then gathering at Mocha Rizing for a hot chocolate. Having such a nice gathering place for coffee or another hot treat in the center of all the activity in town really helps keep people connected in all weather.
All over town the Sandwich Sidhillers have groomed trails for skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. On the lake, bob houses dot the ice and you can tell that people have having a good time.
The news around the world is often sad and scary. Without question, Sandwich folk listen to and debate, the issues of the day; and anguish over injustice and hardship. We all try to make a positive difference when and where we can; and for the most part we’re a pretty caring and cheerful bunch. Isn’t it nice to live someplace where happy, active, social activity is a daily occurrence? Do what good you can to make the world a better place and enjoy the day!
Senior Meals Program The Moultonborough-Sandwich Senior Meals Program is a nutrition program for the seniors in these communities. The coordinators of the program are happy to serve a noon meal to all the seniors that wish to receive one. This meal would be delivered to your home by one of the wonderful volunteers. For more information call 476-5110 P.S. This is delicious food and the program would like to see an increase in number of Sandwich residents receiving the meals. Thank you.

Over the Hill Hikers The Sandwich Over the Hill Hikers are enjoying their winter activities. On Tuesdays a group of cross country skiers travels north, usually to groomed ski trails. Snowshoers often join this group. Carpooling is part of the Tuesday plan. The downhill skiers have various arrangements for meeting and carpooling to the trails.
On Friday a group meets in the morning for local cross country skiing , snowshoeing, and when snow is scarce, walking. The Friday activities end with soup and sociability at a participants home.
If anyone would like to join any of these activities, please call the Over the Hill Leader, Pat Russell at 284-6328. Pat can tell you the time, place for the meeting, leader of the various trips, and discuss with you what equipment is needed. It is not necessary to be a member of the Over the Hill Hikers to join one of the outings.

Just wanted to say that recently citizens have added to the stockpile and if anyone has a need, it is there. Just call the Town Hall and arrangements can be made. Wanted to also take this opportunity to thank P.C Hoag & Co. for their recent delivery of wood to the town stockpile from one of their customers in Tamworth. It is this kind of collaboration between town government and private enterprise that I hope can continue for the benefit of all. Thanks again and enjoy the new powder!

ATTP at NH Theatre Awards Advice To The Players has been nominated for six awards for their 2009 theatre season, and has been invited to perform a scene from Shakespeare’s ‘Henry V’ onstage at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on February 5. ‘Henry V’ was nominated for Best Production in the professional Drama/Comedy category as well as garnering nominations for Caroline Nesbitt as Best Director and Patrick Hornig for Best Sound Designer. Presented in March 2009, ‘Henry V’ featured Advice To The Players’ familiar mix of professional actors and area teens.
Advice To The Players summer show, Shakespeare’s ‘The Winter’s Tale’, also received three nominations. Heather Hamilton was nominated for Best Actress for her performance of Hermione, and Robert Bates and Lisa Thompson each received Supporting Actor nominations for their performances as Antigonus and Paulina.
“'Henry V' and 'The Winter's Tale' are not the easiest stories in the world’ remarked Caroline Nesbitt, who directed both productions. “One deals with the human cost of war and the other examines the way lives are destroyed when emotions like rage and jealousy go out of control. If the plays were tragedies, they'd be easier, you'd just end up with dead bodies all over the stage! Instead, they each deal with very modern issues, ask very hard questions, and don't give easy answers. Just like life. I guess that's one reason I've always wanted to do them, even though they scared me to death. They seemed like a good pair to end my tenure with ATTP. I am humbled by and grateful for our amazing company, and thrilled to have its incredible work recognized.'
Heading up the company for the performance will be Advice To The Players’ acting Artistic Director, Mark Woollett, who will be directing Advice To The Players’ March 2010 production of ‘Hamlet’. The twelve-member ensemble, armed with broadswords, will be recreating part of the famous Battle of Agincourt for the popular awards show. Tickets for the show, which is at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on Friday February 5 at 7 pm, are available by calling 668-5588, or online at http://palacetheatre.org/. Information about Advice To The Players can be found at www.advicetotheplayers.org.

The Carroll County Transit Project (CCTP) The Carroll County Transit Project is simply an effort to bring public transportation to Carroll County. In April of 2009 the Sandwich Selectmen asked Howard Cunningham to represent the Town of Sandwich as an "advisory council" member of the CCTP. He has attended the monthly meetings of the advisory council since, and has been an active advocate for Sandwich.
Four handicapped accessible buses, paid for with federal funds, are being ordered and initial service plans for communities have been developed. CCTP is asking each town for $3000.00 to provide initial support (jobs) for the personnel who will run the system. It is anticipated that this will be a one - time request as revenues from the system, along with government subsidies, should meet future needs.
There is a more detailed description of the plan along with a petition needing signatures at Mocha Rizing. Supporting the petition will enable Sandwich voters to decide the issue at Town Meeting in March.

Baker Sought The Wentworth Library is looking for volunteer bakers to help with our Friday coffee and snack table. If you will already be baking for another event or have a quick recipe for coffee cake, muffins, cookies or other yummy things, sign up for a week. They only need about 2 dozen or so, enough to fill a dinner-sized plate. You can be a one-time baker or help out once every couple of months. Snacks are set out with coffee throughout the day on Fridays beginning at 10am but donated goodies can be brought by and refrigerated the day before. What recipe do you have to show off?
The library also has our new Adopt-A-Shelf sheet for those of you who kindly double-check our shelving efforts. If you are interested in helping to keep a section alphabetized, come on in and pick a letter or category and check it once a month (more if you are so motivated). That's it! It's really easy and it makes a big difference.
Also, the library is always looking for a few good long- or short-term volunteers who may have a consistent hour or two a week to help with some on-going projects at the library. Some of these projects include computer work, labeling books, shelving or simply helping to decorate the library for each holiday or season.
The library is a place for and of the community. Your help is needed and desired! If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Bethany Powers 284-6665.
Lego Creations Check out the new Lego Club creations on display in the library! 18 little inventors created cars, planes, houses and, well, you may need to use your imaginations on some of them. SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Rain and ice certainly are not welcome this week with the Sandwich Winter Carnival coming up this Saturday. Ice under foot is always something to be wary of and ice grippers are now just one more piece of winter gear we’ll need to keep handy. Some nice snow for the weekend would definitely be appreciated by many.
It was sad to hear last week that David Leach lost most of his farm animals in a barn fire Thursday evening. The Sandwich Fire and Rescue Squad were able to save David’s house and some outbuildings; but the large barn was destroyed and chickens, cattle, goats, and pigs perished. A number of people both here in Sandwich and in some neighboring towns have asked me if there is anything that they can do to help David. At press time (Monday noon), I know there were some plans coming together through the Sandwich Selectman’s Office; but they have not been finalized. Sometime soon, there will be a post on the Sandwich Board and next week I should have some information for the Sandwich Column.
Sandwich Winter Carnival The Annual Sandwich Winter Carnival, sponsored by the Sandwich Recreation Department and supported by many organizations and businesses in town, will be held on Saturday, January 30. Most of the activities will take place at the Ice Skating Rink, the Sandwich Town Hall and Quimby Field.

Here’s the list of activities: 10:00 a.m. Kid's Snow Shoe Races Quimby Field; 11am Adult Snowshoe Races on Quimby Field and Lakes Region Lakers Mites Demonstration at the Skating Rink; 12 noon, Ice Carving Demonstration in front of Town Hall; 12 noon Chili Contest in the Town Hall; Mailers (Moultonborough/Inter-Lakes High School Hockey) Team followed by instructional skate for kids with high school players at the Skating Rink; 12 noon, Scavenger Hunt for Kids and ongoing Trivia Contest at the Ice Rink; 12 noon Snow Sculpting by the Inter-Lakes High School Honor Society; 12 noon, Face Painting and food provided by the Sandwich Central School PTO; 1:00 p.m., Kids skating contest and Curling at the Ice Rink; Sled Dog and Skijoring demo, next to the Ice Rink; 2:00 p.m., Sledding across from the Ice Rink; 2:00 p.m. Adult pick-up hockey at the Ice Rink. Some activities are subject to change due to certain weather conditions. Other activities may be added as a substitution, again, depending on the weather! At press time there was some talk of a dance at Town Hall on Saturday night. Look around for posting on the Sandwich Board and posters around town. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please call the Sandwich Rec Department at 284-6473. Porter Moore, Interim P & R Director.
