SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

Even in the middle of winter, Sandwich manages to keep people busy with all kinds of events, and meetings to do good in the community and beyond. We may be somewhat geographically isolated by mountains and lakes; but we certainly are people connected to each other and the world.

As I wrote this week’s Sandwich column and as a long-time 4-H leader in Sandwich, it seems to me that our townsfolk live out the 4-H Pledge at all stages of life. Read the 4-H Pledge and the articles that follow see if you agree with me. Here’s the pledge: I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world. Just in case you’ve wondered, the four H’s in 4-H are Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Information about our local 4-H clubs appears most every week at the end of the Sandwich Column. As a community we strive to “Make the Best Better” and to “Learn by Doing”.  Have a great week!

Ladies Night Out
The Sandwich Woman’s Club invites all area women to gather at the Corner House Inn on Monday, February 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for an evening of good food and conversation. This is an informal social time to gather by the fire upstairs in the pub and to order some appetizers or other food from the Corner House Menu and to visit. All are welcome to stop in for the entire time or just a short hello. If you would like more information on the gathering or the Sandwich Woman’s Club, please call Diane at 284-7168,

Sustainable Agriculture in Sandwich
Bob Wright (284-7708) and a number of other people have been talking about Sustainable Agriculture in Sandwich for the last few years. The group has put together a petition to support an Agriculture Commission in Sandwich; and they want to continue the conversation on ways to improve the agricultural future of our area. Bob is thinking that this is a good way to make our community healthier and he would like to dedicate the effort to the memory of Charlie Johnston who shared many of his ideas/ideals on agriculture and of a revived community better able to sustain its own people. A meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on February 10 at the Benz Center; all are welcome.

ILSD Budget Public Hearing
The Inter-Lakes School Board will hold a Budget Public Hearing in the Inter-Lakes High School Community Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, February 5. Many budget items will be discussed in preparation for the March 3rd School District Meeting. Some concern has been raised here in Sandwich that funding for the Sandwich Central School 6th grade has been eliminated for 2010/2011 and that it is important that the school board hear from the citizens of Sandwich on how they feel about this. At present, plans are to have Sandwich Sixth Graders attend classes in Meredith.

Sandwich Photos Wanted
The Sandwich Business Group is seeking photos of scenery and activities taken in the last year or so in Sandwich. The photos submitted will be considered for use in the 2010/2011 Discover Sandwich Brochure and possibly on the business group’s website. Local businesses help make and keep our community vibrant for all ages. We all like to have places to go for a cup of coffee, good conversation, or a meal; and we want our families in town to have the ability to earn a living in Sandwich and keep our town an active and family-friendly community. Do you like to take visiting family and friends our for a walk around the village to some of our quaint shops or galleries? And isn’t it nice to have a friend or neighbor who provides a service like carpentry, excavation, electrical work, veterinary care, therapy,  a B&B, a kennel, computer expert, accountant, lawyer….? Sandwich has all these businesses and more. Photos that show off the beauty of our town and people having good wholesome fun makes people near and far appreciate how special our little town is and what wonderful, talented people make Sandwich their home.

The Sandwich Business Group is encouraging all people in Sandwich who own or run businesses here in Sandwich to join the group and to support the activities that our local businesses promote and enhance. SBG provided support to have horse-drawn carriage rides for the Christmas in the Village Festival held annually on the first weekend of December. SBG is a Lead Dog Sponsor for the Sandwich Sled Dog Races (02/20/10). Member businesses also support and donate prizes and certificates for many Sandwich non-profits. SBG is a great way to get word out to people in Sandwich, surrounding communities, and from afar about what kinds of services are available. You might be surprised to learn that over 100 small business enterprises operate here Sandwich.

To learn more about the Sandwich Business Group visit www.discoversandwich.com or pick up a 2009/2010 Discover Sandwich brochure. The 2010/2011 Discover Sandwich Brochure is being organized and current and new members who would like to be included in the brochure should get their information in by Monday, March 1. Last year 25,000 copies of the brochure were printed, mailed, and/or distributed; and SBG and member businesses were part of cost effective collaborative advertising. The business group will have a meeting at 8:30 a.m. at Mocha Rizing on March 1; all are welcome.

Steve Danielovich, Ash Nydegger, Kim Mohan, Ashleigh Bullard, and all the volunteers, rec committee members and our esteemed Selectmen (Leo Dwyer and Russ Johnson) that helped to make a frigid day warm with chili and games for all to enjoy. Community Barn Dance Committee
Do you Do-Si-Do? Do you enjoy tapping your feet to some great music? Or maybe you just like to watch others exhausting themselves on the dance floor?

Have you enjoyed previous Community Barn Dances and always wondered how you could help? Well, now is your chance to join the newly-forming Barn Dance Committee and help make it happen.

The Community Barn Dance has been held for the past 3 summers as an event sponsored by the Friends of the Wentworth Library in conjunction with and as a fund-raiser for the Youth Services section of the library. It has been enjoyed by over 90 people each year as they swirl around the Partridge Rock Barn on Range Road to the fantastic music of the Neal Hill Caravan group. This event cannot happen without the efforts of many volunteers and sponsors.

Safety Tips
Sandwich Police Chief, Doug Wyman, is planning to put another self defense class on probably in April. He instructed one in 08, and had a good response. He tried to put another on during the summer last year and got 0 takers. Sandwich for the most part is a very safe place; but it never hurts to have some preparation and plans so Doug has put some safety tips.

The best tip one can give someone about being safe is use common sense. Of course this could be a relative term. But here are some offerings: Park in well lit areas. Have your keys in your hand ready to go as you approach your car, for two reasons you can get in your car faster, and not be distracted searching for them, and they make a good gouging weapon if you are attacked while trying to get into your car. Always look into your car before getting in. Train yourself to think about scenarios and your response to them. An example would be as you enter a mall, what if a gunman opens fire while I'm at the mall? Do I have my phone, so I can call 911? Do I know where the emergency exits are? If I can't get to an exit what am I going to hide behind, and when given the chance what is my route of escape? If you train yourself to have a plan and your response... you will respond calmer and quicker than if you had not planned.

The best defense is to remain vigilant. Do not be lulled into a sense of false security or complacency. If something does not feel right it probably is not, so when you get that feeling, take precautions and call the police. We would rather have you call us and have it be nothing, than for you not to call us and have it be something!  As always if you have questions or need help please do not hesitate to call. See it, Hear it Report it!

FEBRUARY 18, 2010

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON

While people to the south of us have had a rough couple of weeks dealing with record snow and winter weather, we in New Hampshire and the people of Vancouver, BC, Canada are being challenged by a lack of the white stuff. I am sure that the first few flakes of snow were exciting to the folks down south; but the novelty is most likely gone. And, I am certainly not wishing to have 60 inches of snow to shovel here. It just would be good for the local economy (and my perennial plants) to have good snow cover for the skiers, snow-shoers, mushers, and snowmobilers. The Sandwich Sled Dog Races and events planned with them are most likely to be cancelled; and what kid wouldn’t love some fresh snow for school vacation.

By the time you read this, we’ll probably have some fresh white snow that will help some; but for many activities it just won’t be enough. Think snow for a few more weeks. After March 20, I’ll be ready to think Spring!

Sandwich Sled Dog Race Update
Unfortunately, Mother Nature is not cooperating this winter, and unless the snowstorm we get Tuesday is HUGE, the Sandwich Sled Dog Race, scheduled for Saturday, February 20th, will have to be cancelled for this year.  The status of the Race, as well as general information, can be found on the website www.sandwichsleddograce.org or by calling Julie or Marsha at 284-6206.  Our final decision will be made by 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17th.  The Race Committee and Sandwich Sidehillers would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all the businesses that contributed financial support as well as the many volunteers that signed up to help on race day, and the Sandwich PTO and community.  Business advertising will be carried over for next year’s race, and we welcome any and all volunteer assistance.

Sled Dog Race Dinner
The Sled Dog Race Dinner is planned for Friday, February 19. The Sandwich Central School PTO will again be hosting this delectable dinner for both community members and mushers. It’s always fun to meet all the racers and to see some of the behind the scenes planning that goes into the races.

With the lack of snow in recent weeks, it is possible that this dinner may be postponed to sometime in March and it will be followed by a sled dog program. The sled dog race organizers will make a decision on Wednesday afternoon as to whether or not they can run the races. Their decision will be posted on the Sandwich Board and on their website (see the paragraph on the sled dog races). School vacation week starts Friday afternoon and many school families have travel plans and are heading off.  If there you would like to help with either set up or clean up Friday afternoon and/or evening the extra hands would be most welcome. Please call Ashley Bullard 284-6222 for more details.

The Sandwich Central School PTO is once again looking to add to their supply of stainless steel flatware. Due to tremendous community support they now have enough to offer to students on a daily basis but they lack the numbers needed to host events like this week's Sled Dog Dinner. If you missed the last chance to empty your drawers of all those knife, fork and spoon strays here's a new opportunity! Any and all donations are most welcome and can be dropped off at the school. Thank you!

SHI Meeting
The Sandwich Home Industries' (SHI), Annual Meeting and reception will be held on Thursday, February 25th at the Benz Center. The public is invited to come to a SHI board reception which begins at 6pm, followed by Garry Kalajian's, (a League of NH Craftsmen juried blacksmith), presentation. After his presentation there will be a short business meeting that the public is welcome to attend as well.

This year's presentation is of particular interest because, while Mr. Kalajian's work is original, he uses old, historically correct designs as well as antique tools so that the final forged products are as close to the originals as is possible. Mr. K. lives in Bradford, NH where he has both his shop and showroom. He conducts craft shows, public demonstrations and has a retail gallery as well. Information on his teaching and demonstration schedule will be available at the meeting.

Mr. Kalajian, a resident artist at nearby Holderness School, helped establish a blacksmithing teaching studio in Sanborn Hills and recently concluded a European tour teaching and conducting demonstrations of blacksmithing techniques and production.

Community School Farm
Many of you have been enjoying the bounty from The Community School's farm each week at their Farmers' Table lunches. Soon you'll be able to eat the freshest, most vibrant, delectable organic vegetables right in your own home...and here's how: all summer and fall, they'll raise them and you eat them!

The school’s community supported agriculture (CSA) program has been running for years and years now, providing local families with a share of the farm's harvest. This works on a partnership system; you provide the season's initial operating funds in the form of your membership payment and then they provide vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers (even bread, if you choose it!) throughout the growing season--at no extra cost!

Membership brochures are out at several locations, including at Mocha Rizing in Sandwich and The Other Store in Tamworth. You can download a brochure from: www.communityschoolnh.org. If you sign up before March 1, you will receive not only a 5% discount on your membership price but a free seedling at the Spring Fair in May! Such a bargain!

If you have any questions about share options, membership benefits above and beyond delicious food (bluegrass tix, community dinners, more!), or where to send your check, please call farm manager, Brady Potter, at 323-7000. Looking forward to seeing you at The Community School this summer! Lianne Prentice

Meet the Candidates
Election Day is quickly approaching, and we will have choices to make regarding several positions for which there are more than one person running, including School Board Member- Meredith (Jack Carty and Chris Mega), and in the Town of Sandwich, the positions of Selectman, Town Clerk/Tax Collector, and Supervisor of the Checklist.

Come meet the candidates on Sunday, February 28 at 3:00 p.m. in the Methodist Meeting House on Main Street. You will have an opportunity to hear a biography of each candidate, and then ask them questions that will help you to make informed choices as voters. Lee Quimby will moderate this informative event.

Organizers are trying to determine if there is a need for child care. If you will make use of this service, please contact Lucy Glenday at lucy@moxiemedia.com . Lee Quimby and Lucy Glenday, Organizers

The following candidates have filed for Town Offices: 1 Selectman (for 3 years), Jim Gaisser, Gerry Gingras; 1 Moderator (for 2 years), Lee Quimby; 1 Treasurer (for 3 years), Jonathan Taylor; 2 Library Trustees (for 3 years), Carla Muskat; 1 Town Clerk/Tax Collector, Sharon Teel & Jennifer Elliott;1 Trustee of Trust Funds (for 3 years), Carroll Bewley; 1 Supervisor of Checklist (for 6 years), Edwin (Ted) Adriance & Nancy Stearns; 1 Cemetery Trustee (for 3 years), Roger Merriman; 1 Sewer Commissioner (for 3 years), Tom Shevenell.

As you can see, there are two openings for a Library Trustee and only one person filed.
We have three contested races: Selectman, Town Clerk/Tax Collector, and Supervisor of the Checklist. The paper ballot will be posted at Town Hall as soon as it is available from the printer - it should be here in the next few days.

In addition to the Meet the Candidates night here in Sandwich (Sunday 2/28) there are a few more opportunities to learn about Chris Mega, candidate for school board this year.

There is an opportunity to meet Chris, discuss issues and ask questions on Thursday, February, 25 at Mame's restaurant in Meredith from 6-8:30.
The reception is free and residents from Sandwich, Meredith and Center Harbor are encouraged to attend.

For those that would like to learn more and can't make a scheduled event you can learn more about Chris at chrismega.com His biography is posted there and there is an opportunity to send him email questions.
