SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
The snow is losing its fresh whiteness and all kinds of debris from the fall and winter is now being uncovered. Thanks goodness when we rake all the branches, leaves and dead plant stems we find little wisps of green grass and the tips of daffodils. It is always fun to see the grass green up and the spring bulbs appear.
Maple sap is being collected and boiled down all around town. Many a tree has buckets or blue lines running though the maple groves. The steam rising from the sugar houses is just one more reminder that winter is evaporating and the sweetness of spring is coming.
Also coming are the spring babies. Several of my friends and acquaintances have sheep and lambs are arriving. The birds and wild critters are also out and about
The promise and appearance of spring life sure gives me hope and a child-like joy. Check out all the new life around you and smile!

From the NH Office of Energy and Planning Address Canvassing is the first major activity that prepares for the 2010 Census that will occur in April 2010. Over the next couple of months, from late April through early July 2009, census employees will verify the address and physical location of all New Hampshire's dwellings. An accurate list of all of the addresses where people live is the cornerstone to a successful population count because the list identifies the households that will receive a census questionnaire.
To refine the list, census employees will travel through every community and look for every place where people live or stay, or could live or stay. Using hand-held computers, census employees will compare what they discover on the ground with what is already on the Census Bureau's address list. In downtown and urban areas, each member of an address canvassing team will verify an average of 150 addresses per day; people working in rural areas will verify approximately 62 addresses per day.
Forest Fire Warden When Gerry Hambrook passed away last year, Jim Mykland was appointed Forest Fire Warden for the Town. Now that King Winter is slowly relaxing his grip, it is a good time to go over some basic burning rules.
Soon, within the next 10 days or so, Fire Permits will be required for any outside burning in Sandwich. Until then, you may burn permissible material as long as it is surrounded by snow- surrounded as in snow within six feet or so of the material being burned. You must have a Fire Permit to burn permitted materials. With a Permit, you may burn between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. The fire must be extinguished by 9 a.m., not left smoldering to put itself out. Permits may be cut off due to windy or dry conditions.
You may burn during the day IF IT IS RAINING. If it stops raining, it is your responsibility to completely extinguish the fire. It can't look like it's going to rain, have rained yesterday or have rain in the forecast for sometime later today, it must be actually raining.
You may ONLY burn untreated wood. No painted or stained wood, no pressure treated wood, no other building materials like shingles, tile, insulation, etc… Un-permitted materials must be disposed of properly.
No permits will be issued over the phone. Permits will be available at the Selectmen's Office, North Sandwich Store and, hopefully, Mocha Rizing during regular business hours. Plan ahead. (Calling the Warden at 5 a.m. to burn a brush pile that has been sitting in your field for three years will almost certainly entail an on site visit from the Warden, when his schedule permits.) Remember, once you light the match, you are responsible for the outcome.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Last week we still had lots of snow everywhere in Sandwich. This week I am writing my first April 2009 column and spring is now really taking hold. Daffodils that were only ½ to and inch tall last Monday, now have buds and some in my yard might start to bloom by week’s end. I also expect that some warm evening this week, the peepers will be singing in the little pond at the edge of my woods.
Last Friday night in the rain, frogs were out on Bean/Squam Lake Road. I really hate being on the road when they are on the move as it is impossible to avoid all of them. I have console myself that the ones that don’t make it across are entering the food chain and providing a nice meal for some other animals.
Easter Sunday is coming up on the twelfth so people will be celebrating new and renewed life in our midst. The drab colors of winter will change to the pastels and greens that light up the spring landscape. Sometimes that transformation happens so quickly that is like taking a child’s picture drawn with color-change markers and then going over it with the color changing pen- it’s like magic.
Ladies Aid The ladies of the Ladies Aid of the Federated church of Sandwich will meet at 11:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall in the Methodist Meetinghouse on Thursday, April 9. Convener will be Susan Davies. The Program will be Bev Newton from Innisfree Books; she will talk about some interesting books. Hostesses are Karen Wright and Ferne Tilton. Surroundings is extending their Oldies sale for this one last special event as well as offering a 20% discount on other works of art in the gallery. The facilities will be open from 4-7pm on Friday April 10, and 10-5pm on Saturday, April 11.

I heard the “peepers” singing their spring songs Saturday night for the first time this spring. That’s a sure sign that spring is taking hold even if we still have some very cold nights like earlier this week.
Over the Easter weekend many of our seasonal families were in town to visit and celebrate Easter. It was good to see Jackie Gamper and many others in church yesterday.
Meet the Candidates As Moderator of the Town of Sandwich and the Inter-Lakes School District , Lee Quimby is pleased to report that he has been able to arrange a "Meet the Candidates" night in Sandwich on April 16. NH District 3 Senate candidates Jeb Bradley and Bud Martin have agreed to come to the Sandwich Central School at 7 p.m. to discuss campaign issues and answer voter questions. They seek the seat formerly held by Bill Denley of Wakefield who resigned shortly after being elected. The Senate is dealing with many controversial items including the state budget, the death penalty repeal and a marijuana bill so it's a very important election and the goal of the candidates night will be to help voters determine who is most worthy of their vote when they go to the polls for a special election on April 21.
Stories from The Great Depression "Down and Out in America" a program about The Great Depression sponsored by the Friends of the Wentworth Library and the Sandwich Historical Society through a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council will be held at the Benz Center on Sunday April 26th at 2 p.m. Historian Dr. Lawrence H. Douglas will be the featured speaker on this timely subject. It is hoped that a few people with stories to tell (or you may submit them in writing and someone from one of the groups will "tell" them) about living in Sandwich during the Great Depression. If you would like to contribute a story please reply by email. Help is needed!!

(Please note: silent auction items will not include the guest collector’s items)

Master Plan Update Advisory Committee The Sandwich Master Plan Update Committee and the Sandwich Planning Board are pleased to announce that a public forum on the future of Sandwich will be held at the Sandwich Central School on Saturday May 2 from 9 am until noon. This forum is open to all townspeople and is part of the town’s effort to have an open discussion about the town’s opportunities and challenges over the next 10 - 20 years. The results of this forum will help guide the master plan update process.
“We are very excited to sponsor this forum and encourage all people of Sandwich to attend and participate. Our committee wants to hear from as many people as possible about the future of the town,” noted Carroll Bewley, Chairman of the Master Plan Update Committee.
The Master Plan Update Committee was formed in the Spring of 2008 by the Sandwich Planning Board to assist with the update of the town’s master plan. Since that time, the committee has met on numerous occasions to develop topics to be included in the plan, review past plans and current data and to select a consultant to help the committee and planning board in preparing the updated plan. With a 2009 Town Meeting vote to fund the project, the committee is now working with the consultant to develop and implement a plan over the next 18-months.
The kickoff forum marks the start of the planning process for the blueprint of Sandwich’s future. The committee wants to hear from all Sandwich residents about their ideas and concerns to help guide the committee’s work so that the final plan will reflect the values and desires of Sandwich’s citizens.
Sandwich Library Plant Sale Green things starting to sprout from your garden? It's almost time to divide those perennials! The Friends of the Library Plant and Bake sale will be held on May 9 to raise funds for youth services. If your garden needs some thinning out, perennial plants of all kinds are welcome. If you need help digging, dividing, or potting your plants, we can help. If you would like to help us dig, divide and pot plants, we need some volunteer gardeners...it's a great way to spend some time with friends on a spring day, and to help your library at the same time. To volunteer to either help to bring or plants, or if you have questions, please either email, or call Marj Allen (253 4615).

Become a member of the Sandwich Historical Society! The membership drive in 2008 was very successful; Sandwich Historical Society increased its membership by over 100 people. This year, they are going to strengthen the Society by providing increased value to members. The first step in this process is to foster dialogue in this community of choice. The goal in 2009 is to engage the entire membership to promote an all-inclusive history of Sandwich. Your participation in this organization helps to find the stories that we all share and to celebrate them. One of the benefits of your membership is the option of adding your email address to the society’s database so that we can provide you with direct communication about current projects.
You can become a member by filling out a membership card which is available at the Society's website at www.sandwichhistorical.org, the Wentworth Library, and the Society's Marston House.
As the Society looks to the future, a more involved membership community is a prerequisite to a strong historical society. Become a member today and through shared efforts, you are inspired to participate in SHS programs, exhibits, and special projects. Although these are turbulent economic times, SHS endeavors to remain strong for you.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
This week my daffodils are in full bloom and the lakes are free of ice. Yippee!! I love all the color bursting out. Sunny days in the 60’s are pretty nice also.
With a few inches of rain expected for Tuesday, mud might make some of our roads a bit sloppy. Census workers are out in our area this week verifying houses and addresses. Each of these workers has Census identification with them and a specially programmed hand-held “computer”. If you see one of them be helpful and considerate, they are trying to help our government do a better job for all of us. Several people from Sandwich, including my son, Erik, trained at the library last week. This week his duty is to identify every person living on and off all the back roads to which he is assigned—that includes many of the muddy roads driveways from here to the Kangamangus Highway. If you see him or another Census work stuck in the mud, please lend them a hand.
Federated Church of Sandwich Earth Day! World Children’s Day is Sunday, April 26 at the Sandwich Federated Church!!! Everyone of any age is invited from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Hear Ye!!! Hear Ye!!! Make very cool Earth day masks! Stories and a little theater included with Sheila! Yummy goodies to eat! Parents, you are welcome to join us downstairs or enjoy the service and the best sermon in town. I surely like the minister! And WE like YOU!!! Sheila Brown Morgan 284-6151

Sandwich Fairgrounds With the weather getting better and better everyone (almost) is out walking. Please remember that when walking on the fair grounds you dog must be on a leash. Other walkers with or without dogs may not want a dog running up to them that they do not know! Also, if your dog leaves anything on the grounds you should be prepared to pick it up and take it with you this includes inside the fenced in areas as well.
There should be no cars on the grounds. The fields are still "soft" and we do not want the expense of smoothing them out for parking or other functions. The road way is not a public way for vehicles to take a short cut, please stay to the regular roads. Thank you for your cooperation with these issues. The Sandwich Fair Office

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
I found this post on the Sandwich Board by the Sandwich Historical Society quite interesting: This day in history from the Sandwich Reporter...April 22, 1886 "About time to talk base ball."; "Frogs have put in an appearance."; "A good time to fix up that stone wall."; "About time to get your spring tools out and ready for use."; "The maple sugar business is over for this year and our farmers are packing away their utensils for another season."; "The ice in Little Pond has broken up."; "Ed. and Sam. went smelting last night and succeeded in returning home safe and sound, but minus a single smelt. A couple of our Lower Corner boys, Geo. and Jim. went to the same place the same night and brought home about a bushel. Who was the better fisherman."; "The Audobon Society pledges do not exclude the wearing of Ostrich feathers. They are included among feathers of domestic birds."; "The weather here is remarkably warm for the season of the year. It is not very often in the middle of April we have several days in succession from 80 to 85 degrees above zero. "The above observations and notes were written over 100 years ago and most of them could have been written this week. While many things have changed a lot; other things are very much the same. One thing that does remain constant is the passing of time and the passing of good people. In recent weeks, Sandwich has been mourning the passing of some beloved folks: Maggie Woolverton, Shirley Morton, Wilma Blanchard, and Dana Pearson. Each one made many contributions here in Sandwich and other places during their lives. Sandwich also mourns the loss of a newborn baby, Rebekah Grace Canfield, who was born to Amy and Tom Canfield. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and their friends.
